Madre Tierra Restaurant- Playa del Carmen
I hate to tell you, but sooner of later you will get tired of Mexican food. The Madre Tierra is one of the many upper level restaurants above 5th avenue. First of all, ask for a table with a view of the street. Watching the tourists is almost as good as the food. Try to forget you are actually one of them.
We stayed in the Mayan Palace Riviera Maya for the first time we visited back in 2009.
They do a nice job with upscale dishes here. I had the Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon and my wife had shrimp in tamarind sauce. Both were excellent. The sides aren’t mentioned on the menu, but both came with a baked potato. You can get grilled vegetables for an extra 50 pesos ($4) and they make a fabulous addition to an already good meal. Located on 5th avenue and the Calle 14. We recommend this without reservation. You can see details on their website: Madretierraplaya.com
Addendum: we were in Playa again in December 2012 when we were staying in the new Grand Luxxe Villa and Madre Tierra was still there, we didn't have a chance to visit this trip.
