We have been getting a lot of questions about safety in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya following headlines last winter about cartel-related violence in Puerto Vallarta.  This has caused understandable concern among travelers planning a vacation to Mexico. Many people have seen dramatic news reports, social media posts, and videos showing burning vehicles and temporary travel disruptions. The reality, however, is far less alarming than media coverage suggests

What Real People Are Saying

We have spoken with several friends that live in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta.  They have all told us that things returned to total normal within a day or two.  The biggest problem has been the decline in tourism leading to workers suffering from lack of income..

Of course, if you are considering a vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Maya, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, it is important to understand what actually happened and what conditions are like today.

What Happened in Puerto Vallarta?

In late February 2026, Mexican security forces carried out a major operation against the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Following that operation, cartel members launched retaliatory attacks in several parts of western Mexico, including areas of Jalisco state and Puerto Vallarta. The violence included road blockades, vehicle fires, and temporary disruptions to transportation and airport operations. Flights were canceled and travelers were advised to remain at their hotels while authorities restored order.

While the images were dramatic, the situation was short-lived. Within approximately one to two days, authorities regained control, flights began resuming, public transportation returned, and businesses reopened. Tourism officials (and our friends) report that normal operations had resumed throughout the region in a couple of days. Hotels, beaches, restaurants, and major tourist areas quickly returned to regular activity.

Was Puerto Vallarta Specifically Targeted?

No.

The violence was not directed at tourists, resorts, or vacationers. It was a reaction to a government operation against a cartel leader. News reports consistently indicated that tourists were advised to shelter in place as a precaution, not because visitors were being targeted. The disruptions were primarily related to transportation, road blockades, and security operations.  Guests at Vidanta experienced no disruption at all.

In fact, many travelers who were already staying at resorts reported that they remained safely on property throughout the incident. The temporary inconvenience for some visitors involved delayed flights and restricted movement rather than direct threats to tourists.

What About Riviera Maya?

One important fact often overlooked in media coverage is that Riviera Maya was not involved in these events.

Riviera Maya is located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo, more than 1,000 miles from Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. The February security incident occurred in western Mexico and did not affect Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, Puerto Morelos, or the Riviera Maya resort corridor. Travelers vacationing in Riviera Maya continued their trips normally while events unfolded in Puerto Vallarta.

Unfortunately, national and international news coverage often groups all of Mexico together, creating the impression that an incident in one region affects the entire country. Mexico is a large nation with multiple tourism destinations separated by vast distances. A disruption in Puerto Vallarta does not mean Riviera Maya is experiencing the same conditions any more than an incident in Los Angeles would automatically affect Orlando.

What Is the Situation Now?

Today, both Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya continue to welcome millions of visitors.

Tourism officials reported that security was restored quickly and that normal tourist operations resumed shortly after the February incident. Airports reopened, airlines restored service, restaurants and attractions returned to business, and visitors once again enjoyed the beaches, resorts, golf courses, and restaurants that make these destinations so popular.

Even during the recovery period, many travelers and local residents noted that conditions returned surprisingly quickly, with stores open, taxis operating, construction projects continuing, and tourists enjoying their vacations. Additional security measures were also implemented following the incident.

The Bottom Line

No destination anywhere in the world can guarantee perfect safety. However, travelers should evaluate risk based on facts rather than headlines.  Puerto Vallarta has always had the reputation of being an incredibly safe destination and that has not changed at all.

Perhaps most importantly for travelers considering a Caribbean vacation, Riviera Maya was never affected by the events in Puerto Vallarta and continued operating normally throughout the situation.

For travelers planning a stay at Vidanta, Grand Luxxe, Grand Bliss, Grand Mayan, or other leading Mexican resorts, both Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya remain among the country’s most popular vacation destinations. Millions of visitors continue to enjoy these world-class resorts, beautiful beaches, championship golf courses, and outstanding dining experiences every year.
